Professor Richard Templer

Director of Innovation, Grantham Institute; August von Hofmann Professor of Chemistry
Professor Richard Templer is the Director of Innovation at the Grantham Institute and is the August von Hofmann Professor of Chemistry. Professor Templer is an expert in the phase behaviour of lyotropic liquid crystals. However, over the past 14 years, his focus has been on support for climate innovators. He was a co-founder of the Climate-KIC, Europe’s largest public-private seeking to address the causes and effects of climate change through innovation. During his time in the Climate-KIC he oversaw the foundation of the accelerator programme at Imperial in late 2011. This has operated continuously since that time (although now supported by other donors), helping early-stage start-ups raise well over $1/2bn. In late 2015 he returned to Imperial College London to advise the Mayor of London on the creation of a climate innovation cluster, work that continues to this day.
